The Great Apprentice Scandal

by Hannah Blythyn

Young people deserve decent and quality apprenticeships that develop the skills for a long-term career – good for them and good for the economy. Monday’s Panorama programme shows all too clearly that the UK government needs to beware of some employers reclassifying staff to get government funding and avoid paying the national minimum wage. Done properly and in co-operation with employers, training providers and trade unions, apprenticeships can open the door of opportunity for thousands of young people.
